What 'Script Fully Written' Actually Means
Per the developer, Burial's script is complete: the dialogue, the scenes, the route's full narrative arc exist on paper. In most games that would mean the finish line is close. In this one, the script is the beginning of the expensive part - every scene still needs its art, its implementation, its staging inside RPG Maker MV, its testing. A finished script for a hand-drawn game is a finished blueprint for a house that still has to be built by hand.
It does mean something real, though: Burial is not vaporware or an abandoned branch. The writing - the part this game is famous for, the part that cannot be rushed without spending its reputation - is done. What the fandom is waiting on is production, and production from a tiny team moves at the speed it moves.
Why Burial Is a Whole Separate Episode 3
New players often assume Burial is Decay with happier dialogue. It is not. Burial and Decay share a doorway - the Episode 2 finale - and then diverge into essentially different Episode 3s: different scenes, different uses of Julia, different demon bargains, a different destination for the same two people. Kit9 Studio is not patching an ending; it is building a second six-hour episode standing on the same foundation.
That is also why Burial could not simply ship alongside Decay in April 2025, and why 'just release it' misunderstands the object. Decay Part 1 was itself split off and shipped when it was ready. Burial gets the same treatment when its production is done - as a free update, for saves that finished Episode 2 on trust, exactly as designed from the start.
The Fake Date Industry
Search this topic and meet the menagerie: countdown timers that quietly reset, 'leaked' release windows attributed to deleted posts, videos that convert a progress report's paragraph about art production into a month and a year. None of it survives one question - is it on Steam? - because Kit9 Studio announces on Steam, has never pre-announced a distant date for any episode, and has said nothing about Burial beyond its written status and ongoing production.
Notice, too, the tell in the fakes themselves: they disagree with each other wildly while all claiming insider certainty. Real information converges. Fiction, optimised per-website, diverges - and the divergence is the evidence.
How to Be Ready on Day One
- Finish Episode 2 with a trust pattern and confirm your route leans Burial.
- Keep TWO saves: the pre-finale fork and your post-finale Burial save. Never overwrite either.
- Play Decay meanwhile from the fork's other branch - it costs nothing and spoils nothing; the branches share no Episode 3 content.
- Wishlist nothing, buy nothing extra: Burial arrives as a free update to the game you own.
- Ignore every countdown. Check the Steam page when you actually want news.
That is the complete, honest preparation. Burial players are currently the fandom's most patient people - a finished script, an unfinished wait, and a save file standing ready like a packed bag. When the update lands, you will be playing it within the hour, which is more than the countdown sites will be doing. They will be writing the Episode 4 ones.
What Burial Will Mean for Your Saves
One practical consequence of the wait deserves its own section: save hygiene. Burial will read the same route record Decay reads - the trust pattern sealed at the Episode 2 finale - which means the save you protect today is literally the key that opens the branch on release day. Players who overwrote their finale saves, or who finished Episode 2 on Decay only, face a four-hour replay to reach content they technically already earned. Players who kept the fork need twenty minutes. The difference between those two groups is one save slot, protected since before Decay even shipped.
It is also worth deciding your Burial approach in advance, because the branch rewards the opposite instincts from Decay: where Decay asks what resentment does with time, Burial asks what loyalty does without limits. Going in planning to 'play it good' misunderstands the assignment in advance - Burial is not the good route, it is the united one, and in this story those have never been the same thing.
